Speaker Series – SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR)

Join us for our monthly Speaker Series on August 28th at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to learn more about SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) in Miami and how to use their services to help yourself or a loved one.

It can be a challenge for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness to gain access to Supplemental Social Security Income/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSI/SSDI) benefits. For those individuals who also have mental illness, medical impairments, and/or a co-occurring substance use disorder, the challenge can be even greater.

SOAR is a program designed to increase access to these benefits for eligible adults with behavioral health disorders who are also experiencing or at risk for homelessness*, as well as for those returning to their communities from jails and hospitals.

*SOAR Definition of Homelessness

The SOAR definition of homelessness is based on the definitions used by the SAMHSA Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH) program as “an individual who lacks housing (without regard to whether the individual is a member of a family), including an individual whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private facility that provides temporary living accommodations and an individual who is a resident in transitional housing.”

The PATH definition of imminent risk for homelessness commonly includes any of the following criteria:

  • Doubled-up living arrangement where the individual’s name is not on the lease
  • Living in a condemned building without a place to move
  • Arrears in rent/utility payments
  • Having received an eviction notice without a place to move
  • Living in temporary or transitional housing that carries time limits
  • Being discharged from a health care or criminal justice institution without a place to live
